How many websites say who built them

If you build websites for other people, most of your work ends up published under someone else's name. We wanted to know how often a site says who made it, so we went and counted.

We picked 5,000 sites at random from Tranco, a public list of the million most visited websites. We opened each home page once and looked for a line saying who built it, usually something like Site by … in the footer. 3,236 of them answered. 268 looked like they might carry a credit, and we read every one of those ourselves. 89 really did name the person or studio behind the site.

Name whoever built them: 2.8%; 89 of the 3,236 that answered. 0.8% of the biggest sites, up to 4.5% further down the list
Name the platform they run on: 35.9%; A recognisable CMS, or a generator tag saying what made the page
Answered us at all: 64.7%; 3,236 of the 5,000 we tried

One caveat before anyone quotes the 2.8%: we sampled the same number of sites from each of five bands, but the real web has many more small sites than large ones, and small sites are where the credits are. So that figure describes this sample, not the whole web. The band-by-band numbers below are the ones to go by.

Where the credits actually are

Big sites and small sites behave nothing alike, which is why we keep them apart instead of averaging them together. Every percentage below leaves out the sites that never answered.

What we threw out, and why

Searching for phrases like built by turns up a lot that has nothing to do with websites. The script flagged 268 possible credits and 179 of them were not credits at all. We read every one of them by hand, because no rule we tried got it right. In an early test run all four matches were wrong: a CMS's own boilerplate, a medicine “developed by” its manufacturer, and a clinic “built by clinicians”.

How we did it

Picking the sites: 5,000 domains drawn from the Tranco top-1m on 14 September 2026, using a fixed random seed so the same draw can be repeated. They are split into 5 bands: four by traffic rank, plus one deliberately weighted towards small businesses (European country domains ranked below 250,000). No site appears in more than one band.
Loading the pages: One request to the home page per site, a 12-second limit, redirects followed. We checked robots.txt first and skipped the 302 sites that asked crawlers to stay out. Every request identified itself as CreditedResearchBot/1.0 (+https://credited.dev/study; one-off research crawl).
What we counted as a credit: A phrase that names a builder, like built by, diseñado por, réalisé par, umgesetzt von, realizzato da, gemaakt door, desenvolvido por, projekt i wykonanie and about forty more, near the bottom of the page where the footer is. We also flagged a plain by followed by a link to another site. Either one only made a site a candidate. It counted as a credit once one of us read the line and agreed it names whoever built the site.
What we counted as a platform: A <meta name="generator"> tag, or markup that matches one of 17 known platforms and CMSes. That tells you what a site was made with, not who made it.
The sites that never answered: 1,764 of the 5,000 sites we tried never returned a page: dead domains, refused connections, timeouts, and bot protection that blocks crawlers. We left them out of every percentage instead of counting them as a “no”. Some of them may well have a credit we never got to see.

What we would have missed

Credits that are a logo or an image instead of text. We only read text, so those slipped past.
Credits that JavaScript writes in after the page loads. We did not run any.
Credits on an about or colophon page rather than the home page. We looked at one page per site.
Languages our phrase list does not cover, such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi or Russian.

All four mean the real number is somewhat higher than what we found. Even so, about twelve times as many sites name their platform as name the person who built them.

The raw data

One row per site we tried: rank, band, whether it answered, the HTTP status, the generator tag, the CMS we recognised, humans.txt, and for every candidate the phrase that matched, the surrounding text, our verdict and the reason for it. Everything on this page comes out of that file, so you can check any of it.

This gap is why we built credited. If you made a site, one invisible line in its <head> proves the work is yours, without asking the client to put your name in their footer.
